How to get free Iphone Ringtones

To create custom ringtones using only iTunes:
  1. Right click on the song you are going to make into a ringer and select “Get Info.”
  2. Go to the options tab and go down to the “Start Time” and “Stop Time” check boxes. Check both boxes and input the time you want your ringer to start/stop. The ringer has to be 30 seconds or less. Click OK when you’re done.

Right click on your newly “clipped” song and select “Convert Selection to AAC.” The song will be re-encoded using the start and stop times determined (If your menu item does not read “Convert Selection to AAC” and reads “Convert Slection to MP3″ (or some other format) please go to iTunes > Preferences > Advanced > Importing and change the “Import Using” drop down menu to “AAC Encoder”).
  4. After the song is done encoding navigate to your iTunes Music folder, locate your song, and drag it to your desktop. After the song is on your desktop go back to iTunes and delete the clipped version from you iTunes library (It won’t delete it from your desktop, it will only remove it from iTunes).

  6. After the extension is changed simply double click on the file to add it to your iTunes library under the ringtones section. Sync your phone with iTunes and you’re done!

[tutorial] How To Downgrade From iOS 5 or 4.3.5, 4.3.4, 4.3.3, 4.3.2, 4.3.1

Recently, Apple has been cracking down on unauthorized iOS5 users. It has been determined that Apple has identified several developer accounts who broke their TOS by selling their UDID slots for a fee to iDevice users who wanted to try out the iOS5 beta firmware. Apple has begun shutting these developer accounts and if you are one of the people who purchased a UDID slot you will now notice that your device is nothing more than a paper weight.
Please follow the instructions below(Mac/Win) to downgrade from whatever iOS5 beta you are on back to 4.3.5 or 4.2.10(CDMA).
Step 1: Download iOS 4.3.5 or iOS 4.2.10
Step 2: Connect your device that is running iOS5 to your computer and turn it off.
Step 3: Put your device into DFU mode by holding down home and power for 10 seconds and then releasing power but continue holding home for another 10 seconds. If you have troubles, check out our DFU mode video tutorial.

Step 4: iTunes should detect a device in recovery mode and your screen should be black.
Step 5: Hold down shift(win) or option(mac) and press the "restore" button. Select the 4.3.5 or 4.2.10 firmware file you downloaded in step 1 and the downgrade will initiate. Once it is done, your phone will reboot and you will be back on 4.x firmware.

Will Siri only work on iPhone 4S? What about iPad?

Siri on iPhone 4S
During my pre-Apple days, I was already fascinated by a voice recognition program called Dragon Naturally Speaking.  I dabbled with it for a while but since the hardware needed to run the program was on the extreme side, I could say that I didn’t get what I expected from the program.  It was just too tedious to do: check that you have a powerful enough system, install the software, train the program for about ten years (just kidding) in a very quiet atmosphere so that it’ll learn your voice and words at the same time, further train it so that it can follow commands and then wait for the garbage to come out on the screen. Frustrating indeed!

Fast forward to the present and we see Apple presenting Siri to a captive audience during its recent media event and launch of iPhone 4S on October 4th. Sure, Apple has attempted to give voice recognition to its older releases of the iPhone, particularly the 3GS and the iPhone 4, but voice control for these iPhones is really just an experiment when compared to Siri, iPhone 4S’ exclusive Voice Assistant.
Still, I was a little bit disappointed with the release of iOS 5 that Siri has remained an iPhone 4S exclusive. As we all know, the iPhone 4S is powered by the same A5 processor used in the iPad 2. And the iPad 2 also has a built-in microphone – I’m wondering why Siri is not available my beloved iPad.
But before we go into that any further, let’s just check the existing state of Voice Control for the iPhone 3GS and 4. Right now, Voice Control for these devices just doesn’t function on either the iPad or the iPad 2 for the very simple reason that they would be totally useless. The presently available Voice Control on these older devices simply lets you control music playback, dial a contact number, start a FaceTime call, get some info about the currently playing music or get the time… Not much really. But the reason for this is that the older iDevices’ hardware is not powerful enough to handle anything more.
Now comes Siri with its myriad commands specifically designed for a powerful device such as the iPhone 4S.  So the iPhone 4S is announced with Siri in tow but why not for the iPad 2 which shares the same hardware as the newly announced iPhone 4S?  Everything presented during the Apple event – from setting up Reminders and posting Calendar events to searching for anything and everything in Wiki – all of these can be done using the iPhone 4S AND the iPad 2!
Perhaps Apple has reason which it chooses to keep a secret right now. Perhaps Siri’s usefulness must first be tested before Apple rolls it out to iPads. Anyway, all I know is I want SIRI on my iPad and I want it now!
If I can’t get Siri from Apple then I do know I can get it somewhere else…  You know how busy the jailbreaking community can be and it won’t be long before they come out with something like or even better than Siri for iPad.

Setup iCloud in iOS 5 & Mac OS X 10.7.2

iCloud
Apple has rolled out iCloud, the cloud syncing service that automatically syncs all your content to all of your devices, be it an iPhone, iPod touch, Mac, PC, iPad, whatever. It also includes things like Find My iPhone and Find My Mac, in addition to several web apps that let you get your Mail, Contacts, and Calendar while on the go, via any web browser. It’s an awesome service, it’s free, and you don’t want to miss it. Here’s how to set it up from any iPhone, iPad, or Mac:
iCloud Requirements
First things first, you’ll need the latest versions of iOS and/or Mac OS X.

  • An Apple ID – same as an iTunes account or MobileMe login
  • iOS 5 update – for iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
  • Mac OS X 10.7.2 updated – for Mac users
  • iTunes 10.5 installed – required for PC & Mac users
Have those installed and ready to go? Here’s how to set up a free iCloud account:

Setup iCloud from an iPhone or iPad with iOS 5

First be sure you have upgraded your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to iOS 5, .
  • Tap on the Settings app
  • Tap on “iCloud”
  • Choose “Sign in with an Apple ID” (alternately, you can create a new account entirely by selecting “Create a free Apple ID”)
  • Enter your existing Apple ID (iTunes account), or an older MobileMe account
  • Choose “Use iCloud” at the setup screen
  • Tap the “ON” switch for the types of data and services you want to sync with iCloud: Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Bookmarks, Notes, Photo Stream, etc
By default you get 5GB for free, but the iCloud plan prices are reasonably cheap if you require more storage.

Setup iCloud from Mac OS X 10.7.2

Obviously you’ll need your Mac updated to OS X 10.7.2, get it from Software Update .
  • Open “System Preferences” from the Apple menu 
  • Select “iCloud” under the ‘Networking’ section
  • Enter an Apple ID which is the same as an iTunes account, MobileMe login, or create a new Apple ID if you don’t have one yet
  • Accept the EULA and choose which apps and items you want to sync with iCloud
You can change iCloud settings at any point by going back to this preference panel.

iCloud setup for Mac OS X 10.7.2

Once you have configured iCloud, you can also visit iCloud.com to use the webapps, accessing Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Find My iPhone and Find My Mac, and iWork online. Just login with your aforementioned iCloud/Apple ID and you’ll be good to go.

[tutorial] Wi-Fi Sync for iPhone, iPad, & iPod touch with iOS 5

By far one of the best features of iOS 5 is wireless syncing and backing up, as the name implies it allows you to wirelessly transfer apps, music, books, contacts, calendars, movies, photos, everything you had to use a wired sync for, but it’s done through the air. If your device supports iOS 5, it’ll support Wi-Fi syncing, including iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPad, iPad 2, and iPod touch 3rd & 4th generations.
Wireless syncing requires iOS 5 and iTunes 10.5 or later, be sure you have both installed before attempting to enable syncing through wi-fi or else the option won’t be visible. This setup process is the same on Mac OS X and Windows, and is fully compatible with both if you are syncing to the different platforms.

Set Up Wireless Syncing in iTunes 10.5 & iOS 5 for iPhone, iPad, & iPod

You’ll have to connect your iOS device to your computer to set it up, but after that you’re wire free with the exception of charging the hardwares battery.
From iTunes 10.5+
  • Connect the iOS device to the computer
  • Open iTunes and click on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch from the left side of the window
  • Click on the “Summary” tab in iTunes
  • Scroll down and click the checkbox next to “Sync with this iPhone over Wi-Fi” (or iPad or iPod touch)
Enable wireless syncing in iOS 5 for iPhone and iPad
With the iTunes side enabled, now pick up the iOS device to finish the process:
From iOS 5
  • Launch “Settings” and tap on “General”
  • Tap on “iTunes Wi-Fi Sync”
  • Select the computer you set up wi-fi syncing on in the prior iTunes step
  • Tap on the “Sync” button to start the wireless syncing
You can also double-check that this is working by disconnecting the iPhone or iPad and then choosing the “Sync” option from iTunes on the Mac or PC, you’ll see the familiar sync screen on your device.

Using Wi-Fi Syncing with iOS 5

Once wi-fi syncing is enabled and set up properly, the iOS device will automatically sync wirelessly any time the hardware is connected to a power source, including the USB cable, speaker docks, or otherwise. This process will also backup your iPhone or iPad automatically and wirelessly. Other than that automatic process, you can also initiate manual backups and syncing from the iPhone/iPad or from iTunes on the Mac or PC:
Start a Wireless Sync from the iOS 5 Device
  • Tap to “Settings” > “General” > “iTunes Wi-Fi Sync” and tap on the ‘Sync’ button
Start Wi-Fi Sync from iPhone
At any point you can cancel this by tapping the “Cancel Sync” button.
Start Syncing Wirelessly from iTunes on a Mac or PC
If you want to initiate a manual sync, you can continue do so by selecting that button within iTunes.

Start a wireless sync in iTunes to iOS device
If you want to really take advantage of wi-fi syncing and the PC-free experience, don’t forget to sign up for iCloud too, it’s very easy and free for the first 5GB of cloud storage with Apple.
Troubleshooting Problems with Wireless Syncing
There’s a variety of potential issues and fixes, Apple provides has a few helpful tips if you run into any issues:

  • Verify the iOS device is running iOS 5 and the PC or Mac is running iTunes 10.5 or later
  • Quit and relaunch iTunes
  • Restart the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
  • Reset the wireless router
  • Verify the iOS device is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the Mac / PC
  • Check for network interference from cordless phones, metal barriers, interfering wi-fi signals, microwaves, etc
  • Verify firewall settings and that TCP ports 123 and 3689 in addition to UDP ports 123 and 5353 are open and accessible (these are ports iTunes uses)
There doesn’t seem to be any limitation on the number of iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch devices that can be used with this, although you may run into the traditional limit of Macs or PC’s that an iOS device can be linked to.

Download RedSn0w 0.9.9b5 To Jailbreak iOS 5

This new version of RedSn0w has been dubbed RedSn0w 0.9.9b5 by the Dev-Team and is the most reliable way to Jailbreak iOS 5 tethered. RedSn0w 0.9.9b5 is only available to download for Mac OS X as the Windows version will be coming soon after more testing.
Straight from the Dev-Team’s website:
Update #13:  With today’s official iOS5 release, redsn0w has been updated to 0.9.9b5 to include the public URLs for the IPSW files.  This way, first-time iOS5 jailbreakers don’t need to supply the IPSW file manually.  It’s still a tethered jailbreak on all except the old-bootrom iPhone3GS, and it doesn’t apply to iPad2 or the upcoming iPhone4S.
Because the jailbreak is currently only tethered for most devices, we’re not going to release a new PwnageTool yet.  Instead, we’ve decided to build some of PwnageTool’s functionality into redsn0w (since you need redsn0w to “Just boot tethered” on every power cycle anyway).  The new “Custom IPSW” button on the Extras screen will create a custom IPSW without the baseband update for 4.3.3 or 5.0gm (iPhone3GS and iPhone4 only, for now).  Remember not to accidentally restore to the stock IPSW after you create the custom one!  The custom one begins with NO_BB_ (for “no baseband”).
You must enter “Pwned DFU” mode before trying to use the NO_BB_ IPSW with iTunes (and your hosts file cannot be pointing to Cydia’s servers due to the new blob nonce mechanism they’re using in iOS5).
Version 0.9.9b5 only available for Mac for now, until we can do more testing on the Windows version of “Custom IPSW”.
We’re currently working on a normal compatibility update for existing ultrasn0w unlockers.  After that we’ll try to fix the iBooks issue on jailbroken iOS5.
Besides the ability to automatically Jailbreak iOS 5 this version of RedSn0w allows unlockers to update to iOS 5 by creating a custom IPSW (see extras menu). If you would like to download RedSn0w 0.9.9b5 for Mac OS X

Download iOS 4.3.4 For iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad 2, 1, And Pod touch [DIRECT LINKS]

As we’ve speculated over the last few days, iOS 4.3.4 made its debut on iTunes. The new release, without clear release notes, addresses the PDF exploit in Mobile Safari used by JailbreakMe.
IPSW
The release notes aren’t clear, only alleging “security fixes”, although we can confirm that JailbreakMe 3.0 doesn’t work in this release. Blocking this untethered jailbreak was Apple’s only goal with this release.
Any device supported by iOS 4.3, namely the 3rd and 4th generation iPod touch, the iPhone 3GS , the iPhone 4 and the iPad. While Apple clearly hadn’t planned for this release in advance, circumstances forced it: with such an important threat in the wild, not only allowing for a jailbreak, which in and of itself Apple dislikes, but also open up a huge breach that could lead unsuspecting users to have malware loaded onto their devices.
JailbreakMe 3.0 is a jailbreaking solution that allows devices to be hacked without a computer, just by pointing Mobile Safari to a JailbreakMe’s website. A pre-released version of this tool was leaked over the weekend, providing an untethered jailbreak for the iPad 2 for the first time ever before the final official release was made last week. Consequently, Apple began working on iOS 4.3.4 to address this issue.
It should be needless to say that if you’ve jailbroken or are planning to jailbreak your iPad 2 using JailbreakMe, stay away from this update and install PDF Patcher 2 from Cydia instead, which provides the same benefits as this update, plus it won’t break your jailbreak.. Most users might as well just wait for iOS 5, which should come out sometime in the Fall.
In order to install this update, connect your phone to your computer and launch iTunes, if it hasn’t launched automatically. From there, select your device from the sidebar, click on “Check for Updates” and select “Download and Install” when prompted. After a rather large download, your device should begin to update.

Redsn0w Can Jailbreak iOS 4.3.5 On iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad, iPod touch. Here’s How To Use It! [Tutorial]

Apple has unexpectedly pushed out an incremental update for iOS 4.3.x, and it is dubbed as iOS 4.3.5. This minor release is no more than a security update, aiming to patch issues with certificate verification.
iOS 4.3 WM
The good news is that we have tested it and can confirm that the current version of Redsn0w can jailbreak the just released iOS 4.3.5 on iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad 1, and iPod touch 4G/3G. But it will be limited to tethered boot, which means you will have to reconnect your device to your computer every time you reboot your iOS device. iPad 2 is obviously not supported. This has also been confirmed by MuscleNerd of iPhone Dev Team:
@zaone @m1ckey29 ah ok thanks for checking! So those who really do want tethered 4.3.5 can use redsn0w pointed at 4.3.4 (except iPad2)
4.3.5 Jailbreak[4]
Note: Those relying on a carrier unlock must stay away from Redsn0w.
How to Jailbreak iOS 4.3.5 (Tethered)
Step 1: Download iOS 4.3.5 and iOS 4.3.4 (required by this version of Redsn0w) firmware file for your device from the links given at the end.
Step 2: Download Redsn0w 0.9.8b4 for Windows or Mac. Also make sure you are running the latest version of iTunes, which is version 10.4.
Step 3: Now start Redsn0w, browse for the iOS 4.3.4 firmware file (NOT the 4.3.5) that you downloaded in Step 1 and point it towards Redsn0w. Refer to the screenshots below:
4.3.4-Jailbreak
4.3.2-Untethered-Jailbreak-2
Step 4: Once Redsn0w is done recognizing the firmware file, click Next and there you’ll be taken to a new window. Simply check the “Install Cydia” box as shown below and leave other options as it is for now. Once done, click Next.
4.3.2-Untethered-Jailbreak-3
Step 5: On this screen, Redsn0w will instruct you to power down your device and plug it in to your computer. Follow the onscreen instructions and then click Next to continue.
4.3.2-Untethered-Jailbreak-4
Step 6: On this screen you will have to put your device in DFU mode with a combination of the Power button and the Home button for a certain amount of time, simply follow the onscreen instructions on how to do so. The combination is usually like this:
  • Hold down Power button for 5 seconds.
  • Now without releasing the Power button, hold down the Home button simultaneously with the Power button for 10 seconds.
  • Let go of the Power button but keep on holding the Home button for another 15 seconds.
If you performed the above mentioned steps correctly, then your device should be in DFU mode.
4.3.2-Untethered-Jailbreak-5
Step 7: Redsn0w will now jailbreak your device, don’t do anything weird at this point, just let Redsn0w finish. We would recommend that you don’t do anything with your PC or Mac at all during the process. Sitting idle and waiting for the process to end on its own is much advised.
Since this is a tethered jailbreak, therefore whenever your iOS device loses power, it will go into the dreaded Apple logo boot screen loop. To get out of that, simply start from Step 3 again and in Step 4, uncheck “Install Cydia” and instead check “Just boot tethered right now” option and hit “Next” with your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch connected to your PC or Mac. And yes, you will have to do this every time when your device reboots or loses power.
Redsn0w-1
That’s it! You should now have a jailbroken iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running iOS 4.3.5.

ust months before iOS 5 is released and ten days after iOS 4.3.4 came out, one wouldn’t expect to ever hear about iOS 4.3.5. It now turns out that yet another update for iOS 4.3 has been uploaded to Apple’s servers, allegedly fixing a critical security issue.
IPSW
No concrete information about this update has been provided about this update, other than it seems to fix an issue with certificate validation, as pointed out on Apple’s change log:
A security issue has been resolved with certificate verification.
iOS development has been on fire lately, with new updates being rolled out for both iOS 5 betas and iOS 4.3. Over the weekend, iOS 5 Beta was released, containing several enhancements to Apple’s upcoming iOS 5 as the release draws closer and closer. A week earlier, iOS 4.3.4 was released, which contained a security fix for Mobile Safari for a vulnerability that allowed a popular jailbreak method, JailbreakMe 3.0, to function. With 4.3.4 behind us, many has expected iOS 5 to be the next step for iOS but Apple has proven us wrong once again.
While it’s still unclear why Apple hasn’t stopped maintaining iOS 4.3 just several weeks before it’s fully replaced, the only possible explanation could be the gravity of the security vulnerability that was found. Although it might have been Apple’s intention not to update iOS 4 any further, the Cupertino company might have been forced to do it given the circumstances before hackers spotted the vulnerability first and started exploiting it.
If you have a untethered jailbroken device, you are advised to stay as far away from this update as possible.
Non-jailbreak iPhone, iPad, iPod touch users are strongly encouraged to download this update as soon as possible. You can do so by plugging your device into your computer, locating it in the iTunes sidebar and clicking on the "Check for Updates" option. The update should then immediately begin downloading and installing.

iFixIt iPhone 4S Teardown

iFixit has posted a detailed and exhaustively illustrated teardown of the new iPhone 4S. iFixit’s Director of Technical Communication Miroslav Djuric says with the help of an iFixit user hailing from Germany, Markus Weiher, the iFixit team successfully dismantled Apple’s latest creation. Not even Siri’s incessant urgings and warnings were enough to deter the team from dissecting it.
“Opening the 4S was no more (nor less) challenging than the iPhone 4,”says Djuric. “We’re always pleased to find a limited amount of adhesive in our patients, and easily removable rear panels are always a plus. However, the same pesky proprietary screws are present, and it’s never a joy to encounter fused (read: expensive to replace) displays. All things considered, the new iPhone isn’t any easier or harder to repair than last year’s model, so it gets the same 6 out of 10 repair score as the previous-gen iPhone 4.”
Djuric notes that there is an extra .05 watt-hours in the battery over the iPhone 4, and according to Apple, you get an extra hour of talk time on 3G, but 100 hours less standby time.

They note that Apple boasts 73% more light with “next-generation backside illumination” for better low-light performance with the iPhone 4S’s new megapixel camera roughly 33% faster and able to snap multiple photos less than a second apart as well as record HD video at 1080p and 30 fps.
They report that the iPhone 4S logic board bears a close resemblance to its stateside CDMA iPhone 4 counterpart, but the display assembly appears to be the same as the one found in the GSM version.
t appears that Apple elected to go with the linear oscillating vibrator that was found in the Verizon iPhone 4, as opposed to the rotational electric motor with counterweight in the AT&T version. This vibrator motor is quieter, softer, and all-around less annoying than its counter-weighted predecessor.

iFixIt gives the iPhone 4S a Repairability Score of 6 out of 10 (10 is easiest to repair), with very little changed from the iPhone 4 in terms of repairability, noting that the iPhone 4S is still held together primarily with screws and limited adhesive, and with the rear panel and battery both easy to remove and replace (provided you have the right kit and/or correct screwdriver), but the LCD and glass — a carryover from the previous generation iPhone 4 — are fused together, making cracked glass repair more costly, and lots of smaller components are soldered to one ribbon cable, increasing the cost of repairing just one component.
Incidentally, if you’re at all a tinkerer with your computers and iDevices, iFixIt’s hardware teardowns and free illustrated teardown guides are an amazingly helpful resource.

It’s iPhone 4S With A5 CPU, Advanced Camera, Siri Voice Assistant, Available 64GB Storage, Plus iOS 5 & iCloud

Well, the rumor mills weren’t just blowing smoke. Apple’s fifth-generation handset is an iPhone 4S folks.
Today at one of its most widely anticipated special events in its history, Apple announced the new iPhone 4S, powered by Apple’s its in-house designed dual-core A5 chip that also is used in the iPad 2; a new camera with advanced optics; full 1080p HD resolution video recording; and Siri – an intelligent assistant activated by voice commands.

I expect that based on comments in the forum threads, a lot of you are going to be disappointed that there’s no iPhone 5 with an all-new form factor and a larger display, (perhaps at next year’s World Wide Developer’s Conference with an A6 CPU?), this is a solid upgrade that kicks the iPhone up several notches performance wise. As an iPad 2 owner, I can affirm that the A5 processor offers a very decent level of performance, and at least in the iPad it runs cool as well. The new camera makes the iPhone a completely respectable photography device, and Siri Assistant will probably have to be tried to be fully appreciated. Concurrently launched with the iPhone 4S is iOS 5, a new version of Apple’s mobile operating system for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, claimed to have more than 200 new features; and iCloud, Apple’s new suite of free cloud services that work with your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac or PC to automatically and wirelessly store your content in iCloud and push it to all your devices.

“iPhone 4S plus iOS 5 plus iCloud is a breakthrough combination that makes the iPhone 4S the best iPhone ever,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “While our competitors try to imitate iPhone with a checklist of features, only iPhone can deliver these breakthrough innovations that work seamlessly together.”

New stuff in iOS 5 includes Notification Center, an innovative way to easily view and manage notifications in one place without interruption, and iMessage, a new messaging service that lets you easily send text messages, photos and videos between all iOS 5 users. iOS 5 will also be available as a free software update for iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS customers allowing them to experience these new features. iPhone 4S also introduces Siri, an intelligent assistant that understands context allowing you to speak naturally when you ask it questions. For example, if you ask “Will I need an umbrella this weekend?” Siri understands that you’re looking for a weather forecast. Siri is also smart about using the personal information you allow it to access. For example, if you tell Siri “Remind me to call Mom when I get home” it can find “Mom” in your address book, or ask Siri “What’s the traffic like around here?” and it can figure out where “here” is based on your current location. Siri helps you make calls, send text messages or email, schedule meetings and reminders, make notes, search the Internet, find local businesses, get directions and more. You can also get answers, find facts and even perform complex calculations just by asking.
iCloud’s free cloud services include iTunes in the Cloud, Photo Stream and Documents in the Cloud, all engineered to work seamlessly with your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac or PC to automatically and wirelessly store your content in iCloud with push access to all your devices. When content changes on one device, all your other devices are updated automatically and wirelessly.

iPhone 4S includes an all new camera whose higher-resolution 8 megapixel sensor has 60 percent more pixels than the camera in the iPhone 4, plus better optics including a new custom lens, a larger f/2.4 aperture and an advanced hybrid IR filter that combine to produce sharper, brighter and more accurate images. The image signal processor in the Apple-designed A5 dual-core chip is also built for higher video performance, and coupled with new features built into iOS 5, will make the iPhone 4S’s the camera one of the fastest on any smartphone. With iPhone 4S, the Camera app launches much faster and the shot to shot capability is claimed to be twice as fast.

New features in the Camera and Photos apps give you instant access to the camera right from the lock screen, and you can also use the volume-up button to quickly snap a photo. Optional grid lines help line up your shot and a simple tap locks focus and exposure on one subject. The new Photos app lets you crop, rotate, enhance and remove red-eye, and organize your photos into albums right on your device to share them on the go. Other new iOS 5 features include built-in Twitter integration and iMessage, so you can instantly share your photos via Twitter directly from the Photos app and send photos via iMessage to individuals or groups. And with iCloud’s new Photo Stream service, a photo you take on your iPhone is sent to iCloud and automatically pushed to your iPad, iPod touch, Mac or PC. You also view your Photo Stream album on your Apple TV. iPhone 4S can also now record video in full 1080p HD resolution and with the new video image stabilization feature, you can take slicker, smoother videos. Other iPhone 4S video camera improvements include increased sensitivity, sharpness and an increased ability to capture video in low light conditions. With the new iMessage service in iOS 5, you can now instantly share videos with family and friends.
iPhone 4S carries over the iPhone 4′s glass and stainless steel form factor externally, but Apple says it’s completely redesigned on the inside. The dual-core A5 chip delivers up to twice the processing power and up to seven times faster graphics than you get in the iPhone 4, all while maintaining incredible battery life — now up to 8 hours of 3G talk time.

Improving on the somewhat infamous (although never as bad as some folks made out) stainless steel external, dual-antenna design of iPhone 4, iPhone 4S is the first iPhone model that can intelligently switch between two antennas to send and receive. iPhone 4S now supports twice the download speed with HSDPA of up to 14.4 Mbps and is a world phone, supporting both CDMA and GSM so users can now roam internationally on GSM networks. Carrier roaming policies apply. HSDPA availability and network speeds are dependent on carrier networks. When Can I Get One, And How Much?
iPhone 4S comes in either black or white and will be available in the US for a suggested retail price of $199 (US) for the 16GB model and $299 (US) for the 32GB model and $399 (US) for the new 64GB model (offered to qualified customers only — requires a new two year rate plan, sold separately). iPhone 4S will be available from the Apple Online Store, Apple’s retail stores and through AT&T, Sprint, Verizon Wireless and select Apple Authorized Resellers. iPhone 4S will be available in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the UK on Friday, October 14 and customers can pre-order their iPhone 4S beginning Friday, October 7. iPhone 4 will also be available for just $99 (US) and iPhone 3GS will be available for free with a two year contract. Siri will be available in beta on iPhone 4S in English (localized for US, UK and Australia), French and German. iOS 5 software will be available on October 12 as a free software update via iTunes 10.5 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch customers.
iPhone 4S will roll out worldwide to 22 more countries by the end of October including Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

Will Apple’s A5 Processor Be Enough To Satisfy iPhone 5 Users?

iphone 5 a5 chip
Will the A5 chip be enough to propel the iPhone 5 to greatness?
Although many new features for the iPhone 5 have been speculated on, few seem to be set in stone — with the exception of the A5 processor. but if the A5 turns out to be the “crown jewel” of the iPhone 5 upgrade, will that be enough to excite iPhone users?
There’s no doubt that the most talked-about piece of news concerning the iPhone 5 has to be the release date. But a close second is the swirling debate about which features the iPhone 5 will boast. There has been a steady stream of reports about a wide range of different purported features, such as a larger screen, 8 megapixel camera, NFC technology, a non-existent home button, aluminum chassis, and more.
However, there seems to be no agreement on whether any of these features will actually materialize on the iPhone 5 — they seem to “here one week and gone the next.” Even the next iOS 5 operating system has been called into question as to whether or not it will appear on the iPhone 5, with analysts suggesting that it might not be ready until the Fall of 2011.
The only new development for the iPhone 5 that all of the reports and tech pundits seem to agree on is the A5 chip.
And this, of course, is the easiest feature to predict, since it has already seen mainstream application in this year’s new iPad 2. Thus far, the A5 processor has gotten rave reviews from analysts and users alike: tech-oriented folks appreciate the bold power of the A5 and foresee it as a trailblazer for even better things to come, while the average iPad 2 user just feels the improved speed and functionality.
That being said, there was more to the iPad 2′s successful launch than just the A5: the addition of a front- and rear-facing camera, cool gyro feature, industry-leading price, and a thinner and lighter chassis all contributed to the robust sales that the iPad 2 continues to enjoy. The A5 was the “under the hood” improvement from the original iPad, and one could argue that, while it is a key upgrade to the iPad, it isn’t the most “marketing friendly” feature for un-geeky tablet users.
With this mind, what if the A5 chip turns out to be the only significant upgrade for the iPhone 5? Will that be enough to energize iPhone users to the point where they’ll shell out big money to upgrade?
Probably not.
No matter how powerful the A5 processor may be, without some accompanying “bells and whistles” on the iPhone 5, few mainstream iPhone users will see the point in putting to rest their iPhone 4. This reality is precisely why Ferrari, Lambourghini, Porche, and other exotic car manufactuers put a beautiful body on their high-performance sports cars; if their cars looked like a Prius on the outside, no one would buy them at their price point, no matter how big their engines are. (And apologies to all you Prius drivers out there.)
Truth be told, iPhone users will be looking for one big feature to get excited about. Last year, it was the addition of the front-facing camera on the iPhone 4 that excited people. Apple was able to recycle that feature on the new iPad 2. But for the iPhone 5, the A5 processor alone won’t be enough to propel it past this year’s Droid offerings — and at this point, the A5 is the only feature we can bank on.
Let us know what you think about the A5 chip, and if it would be enough to get you excited about buying an iPone 5!

What You Need To Know About the A5 Processor
One way to get excited about the iPhone 5 — even if its only major upgrade from the iPhone 4 turns out to be its chip — is to fully understand and appreciate the power and performance of the A5 in its glory. First, some of the basic stuff: the A5 chip follows in the tradition of all Apple’s mobile processors in that it is a a package on package (PoP) system-on-a-chip (SoC). This means that the whole operating system fits on the chip itself, as compared to personal computers, where the OS is stored and runs off of the hard drive.
The A5 chip is manufactured by top-notch Samsung, and although Samsung has allowed Apple to keep their production costs down, all indications are that the A5 chip is pretty pricey to make. While Apple seemed willing to eat the extra cost of the A5 processor on the iPad 2, it remains to be seen if that will be the case for the iPhone 5 — it could see an uptick in its price point at the expense of a faster mobile computing experience.
The other cool thing about the A5 is that it is a dual-core processor. This means that the CPU has two independent cores that are integrated on one circuit. What does that mean for the layman? The dual-core set-up lets you multi-task at greater speed and fluidity — it’s like having “two computers in one.”
Speaking of speed, the A5 has lots of it. It has been rated at  1 GHz on the iPad 2. However, the chip can dynamically adjust itself to save battery life. The result is that the A5 processor is basically twice as fast as the old A4, and said to be nine times faster than the A4 on graphics. So if you love your graphics on the iPhone 4, wait until you see them running on an A5-powered iPhone 5!

Recent Arrests at Chinese Apple Supplier Could Squelch Leaked iPhone 5 Photos, Specs Until Release

foxconn iphone 5 ipad 2 iPhone 5 components supplier Foxconn recently turned over staffers to Chinese authorities for leaking iPad 2 specs to case designers in 2010, well ahead of its official release this year. With this in mind, is there any chance of leaked authentic iPhone photos or specs making their way to the internet this summer?
Do you love critiquing leaked photos of purported iPhone 5 components and prototypes? There’s no doubt that every new and credible photo or video that appears on the internet ratchets up the buzz and excitement over the next iteration of the iPhone. Is the photo real, or is it a fake?
Given what recently transpired at Foxconn, one of Apple’s primary components manufacturers, chances are that few if any authentic photos of new iPhone 5 equipment will be making their way out of Foxconn’s factory in China.
The Register has reported that Foxconn turned over two of their own staffers to Chinese authorities for allegedly leaking specs of the iPad 2 to case and accessories designers in 2010, well ahead of its recent release in 2011. Writer Richard Chirgwin reported that, “The design leak allowed the third party manufacturers to build iPad 2 cases that were the right thickness and accommodate the location of the camera on the rear of the device.”

The tech community did indeed do a double-take at how rapidly the top case case designers rolled out fresh, tight-fitting iPad 2 cases, given the fact that the second iteration of the iPad 2 did see some changes to its dimensions. But considering the form-factor of the iPad 2 is relatively similar to its predecessor, most tech pundits assumed that it was simply easier to adjust base iPad case designs the second time around, versus having to “inflate” the dimensions of iPhone cases to accommodate the first iPad, as they did in 2010. Little did we all know that Foxconn employees were leaking the iPad 2 specs — and for lots of money, no doubt, especially given the mammoth size of the consumer electronics accessories sector worldwide.
We’ve reported before in an earlier article how case designers for the iPhone and iPad struggle to keep pace with Apple’s famously tight-lipped product release schedule. Thanks to Cupertino’s legendary “Worldwide Loyalty Team,” secrets are kept close to Apple’s belt, with the idea being that, the fewer the leaks, the bigger the splash when CEO Steve Jobs walks out onto that stage with whatever newfangled gadget he’s come up with. Take, for example, original iPhone: it is well-documented that it was kept a total secret from the public for 30 months from the time of its inception. Even the CIA couldn’t hold a secret for that long.
Gizmodo has a great exposé on how the Worldwide Loyalty Team works. And Gizmodo should know, considering that their own Jason Chen found himself in their crosshairs last summer when he obtained a prototype of the iPhone 4.
But for as much as Apple is resoundingly solid in containing leaks from within the U.S., controlling the security situation at their components manufacturers overseas is another story. There is no doubt that Apple’s contractual relationship with companies like Foxconn includes a security and non-disclosure clause that is probably unlike anything else in the tech industry, requiring its partners to conform to strict security standards that must be followed in order to keep the working relationship in good standing. It can also be assumed that Apple “operatives” — even from the Worldwide Loyalty Team — spend a fair share of time slinking around Foxconn’s facilities (they are a worldwide organization, after all).
But they cannot keep their finger on the pulse of every aspect of security at Foxconn or other manufacturers, which is why the iPad 2 specs were able to be leaked last year.
How The Foxconn Bust Impacts the iPhone 5
Given the now delicate nature of the iPhone 5′s release date and purported features (or lack thereof), all eyes are going to point toward Foxconn, looking for any signs that the iPhone 5 has gone into production. But any information we gain over the summer about the iPhone 5 is most likely going to be circumstantial at best; it’s hard to imagine that anyone at Foxconn would risk leaking iPhone 5 photos, prototypes, or specs, all while two of their comrades are being sweated down by the Chinese police.
One could also imagine that there are some case manufacturers shaking in their boots as well, who, up until the arrests last week, may have been feeling out the prospect of getting an advance peek at the new iPhone 5 dimensions, so that they could once again be first to market with their iPhone 5 cases.
All of that seems unlikely now.
So, the next time a shady website claims to have new parts, photos, or specs of the iPhone 5, think of those ex-Foxconn employees under the hot lamp of the Chinese investigators and ask yourself: would anyone risk leaking this stuff to the media?

Unlocked iPhone 4S Will Work On T-Mobile

T-Mobile didn’t officially get the iPhone 4S this year. But new claims indicate that the unlocked iPhone 4s, which will be available in the U.S. in November, will work on T-Mobile’s GSM network.
One of the big stories gripping the iPhone newswires today is that the unlocked iPhone 4S, due to be released in November, will not work on CDMA networks. AppleInsider reports that “Customers who buy an unlocked iPhone 4S will be able to use the handset internationally on GSM networks. They must obtain a micro-SIM card from a local GSM carrier to put in the handset.”
While CDMA dominates much of the network technologies for mobile carrier in the U.S., the unlocked iPhone 4S’s ability to work on GSM calls into question whether or not it would work on T-Mobile’s network, which is GSM like AT&T’s network. Apple’s own comments avoid mentioning T-Mobile, when they say: “The unlocked iPhone includes all the features of iPhone but without a contract commitment . . . You can activate and use it on the supported GSM wireless network of your choice, such as AT&T in the United States.” However, an astute reader of the iPhone 5 News Blog has done some research and investigating, and has discovered that the unlocked iPhone 4S will indeed work on T-Mobile.
Joel Grissom, known as Green Joe here on the blog, reported the following at the start of this week, once it became clearer that an unlocked iPhone 4S was coming: “I called Apple’s iPhone sales department, and asked if they will make an unlocked version of the 4S, and if so, would work with T-Mobile other than just edge speeds. The answers were definite ‘yes’es.”
We called Apple as well, not identifying ourselves as journalists, and received the same answers from Apple customer service.
Joel also followed up on his research by contacting T-Mobile as well, and told us on Wednesday, “Today I spoke with more than 7 people in T-Mobile, till I could find someone who had knowledge of their Network in detail. I have it confirmed with Apple and with T-mobile: a jailbroken or unlocked iphone 4S will work on T-mobile with speeds up to the max of the iPhone’s capability. Using the UMTS 1 (HSPA+, 2100MHz) band of the iPhone.”
This was a superb piece of research on Joel Grissom’s part — many thanks for the information, Joel!
Why Isn’t the T-Mobile Capability for the Unlocked iPhone 4S Being Touted?
It comes as a surprise that neither T-Mobile nor Apple have boasted about the unlocked iPhone 4S’s ability to work on T-Mobile’s GSM network, and it begs the question: why? The answer may lie in the anti-trust suit against AT&T and T-Mobile, sensing that the perception that T-Mobile is “getting the iPhone” without a formal contract with Apple may complicate the process. It could also anger new Partner Sprint, who has invested a great deal and risked much of its future on adding the iPhone to its offerings. T-Mobile may have its hands tied in being able to promote and market the fact that the unlocked iPhone 4S will work on their network.
The ability to use the unlocked iPhone 4S on T-Mobile will give AT&T customers the opportunity to jump ship to a new carrier with better customer service and satisfaction, while not having to abandon the speed and versatility of the GSM network.

  • iPhone 3GS [Ancien bootrom] ==> untethered
  • iPhone 3GS [New bootrom] ==> tethered
  • iPhone 4 ==> tethered
  • iPod Touch 3G ==> tethered
  • iPod Touch 4G ==> tethered
  • iPad 1 ==> tethered
