Mobile video company Qik, which has been acquired by Skype, launched a new iPhone app called Qik Video Connect, enabling people to stay connected with friends and family through video calling, video messaging and video sharing.

We all know how the video calling and video messaging work, so I’ll talk a bit about video sharing. It [video sharing] allows users to post a live video link to Facebook and Twitter so friends can watch the moment as it is being recorded. Moreover, Qik creates a social video feed so your buddies can easily follow your whereabouts.

The application is available in two versions, one of which (Qik Video Connect Plus) is not free. Those 3 bucks get you additional features, such as real-time effects (7 effects and filters), basic video editing and HD quality video support.

Both the Qik Video Connect and Connect Plus apps enable live video chat over 3G or WiFi between iPhones, iPod Touches and iPads with built-in cameras…

Disco Messenger for iPhone by Google is another messaging app in the bucket

disco messenger Disco Messenger for iPhone by Google is another messaging app in the bucket

There is certainly no shortage of messaging apps for the iPhone. Disco Messenger by Google now joins the ranks of Beluga, GroupMe, Fast Society, WhatsApp, Kik Messenger and others for messaging platforms available for Apple’s smartphone. When will it ever stop?

Disco Messenger was created by a company called Slide, which was purchased by Google late last summer. The messaging app uses text messaging to get messages through, so if you’re going to spring for this thing, be sure to have an unlimited SMS plan. You can create groups, add friends and just go nuts annoying everyone with random messages.

The app will give you a new number to text when you when you sign up, sort of like some of the international messaging apps available for the iPhone, that will be used when you’re sending messages to your friends.

If you’ve tried the dozens of other messaging apps for the iPhone, but weren’t satisfied, give this one a try. It’s free and available in the iTunes App Store now.

iPad, iPad 2 get unofficial CF card compatibility

Given the impressive knockoffs and official camera kits we've seen, we'd say the iPad's definitely got the stuff to help out most shutterbugs, but up until now, uploading content from a CF card wasn't exactly easy. Well, our friends over at MIC Gadget recently showed off an iPad / iPad 2-compatible card reader that fixes that on the cheap. Simply called the CF card reader for iPad and iPad 2, the thing slips right into the slate's dock connector port and, as you can see from the video below, it transfers HD video and high-res images in a snap -- it also sports USB connectivity. Like its predecessor, the reader's available from MIC for $29.90, but you'll have to wait at least a month to get your hands on one. Oh, and a word of warning, you might want to make sure the iPad supports your camera's video format before shelling out the dough, as MIC found the slab couldn't playback video from a Canon EOS 5D Mark II.
